What is Moringa?

Moringa (Moringa Oleifera, or "Drumstick Tree") is a fast-growing tree native to the Himalayan Mountains in northwestern India. Due to its superior cultivating quality and nutrient-rich edible parts, Moringa is being researched and cultivated by several NGOs for the purpose of reducing hunger and poverty in developing countries.
The leaves are the most nutritious part of the plant. They contain three times more iron than spinach and are loaded with tons of vitamins, including vitamin C and vitamin A, calcium, potassium and protein, as well as powerful antioxidants.
Because of how nutritious Moringa is, doctors and researchers recommend it for energy enhancement. Traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine uses the flowers, gum, bark, roots and seeds of Moringa trees for healing. Practitioners use Moringa for its antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties. Moringa gum is used to treat headaches, fever, dysentery, asthma and intestinal cancer.

The Moringa tree has compounds with significant antibacterial properties. A 2010 study found that Moringa seeds and leaf extracts killed E.Coli, Pseudomanas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterbacter aerogenes bacteria. Its extracts are also effective against Salmonella, which causes dysentery and inflammation of the stomach and intestines. In addition, the research found that Moringa has significant anti-fungal activity.
